SCORE!? You can say that again. The brass at Merge Records have revealed quite a few more of the folks laying covers and remixes of their favorite Merge catalog classics on subscribers to the label's 20th anniversary SCORE! box set series-- which, to recap, is due to include 14 celeb-curated comps of Merge favorites, a covers disc, a remix collection, and other goodies. The list of contributors has grown even more impressive with today's announcement: in addition to those previously reported covers from Death Cab for Cutie, the National, and Ryan Adams, the covers disc will sport reinterpretations of Merge gems from the New Pornographers, Bright Eyes, Jens Lekman with Tracey Thorn (Everything But the Girl, Marine Girls), Okkervil River, the Mountain Goats, Les Savy Fav, Bill Callahan, Ted Leo, Times New Viking, Quasi, the Apples in Stereo, Laura Cantrell, Stephin Merritt associate Barbara Manning, and a few that have yet to be confirmed. As for the remixes, the likes of Caribou, Junior Boys, Gregg "Girl Talk" Gillis and Frank Musarra's Trey Told 'Em, Barbara Morgenstern, John McEntire (Tortoise, the Sea and Cake), Mark Robinson (Unrest, Teenbeat Records), and Hands Off Cuba join Battles, Four Tet, and Jason Forrest in their tinkering. That's at least twice the number of famous people I had at my 20th. At least.Full details are yet to come, but bear in mind, you'll save some coin on SCORE! should you order the sucker before November 8. The first two volumes, hand selected by Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Junebug director Phil Morrison, are due in January.
