Intergalactic, planetary: Tom Jenkinson gets celestial with the inventive video for "Planet Gear", taken from his newest album as Squarepusher, Just a Souvenir. The central idea for the clip involves "imaginary astronomical phenomena." Jenkinson created his constantly changing, multicolored outer-space shapes through a complex process based around a video synthesizer program, which he originally developed to add a visual element to Squarepusher live shows. So the images shift in sync with the herky-jerk avant-punk clamor of the track, but it's a bit more interesting than your basic iTunes or Winamp visualization. In a way, you can actually see the muscular fuzz-bass line jostling up against busy cymbals and jazzy drums. It's the high, clear synth lines that join about halfway through, though, that give the music its spacey quality. Maybe they're what's hanging over Saturn.[from Just a Souvenir; out now on Warp]
