The long, strange life of M.I.A.'s Kala crime spree "Paper Planes" continues. More than a year after Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit's "Tengazako"-- and a few months after the Pineapple Express trailer and T.I.'s star-studded hip-hop recasting, "Swagga Like Us"-- comes Jim Jones' claim that they're "Jackin' Swagga From Us". It's a darker-sounding track than the Kanye West-produced track from Tip's Paper Trail, with all sorts of murky synth-gloom and a more regular, percussive beat than its predecessor to go with that familiar Maya vocal hook.Lil Wayne, who sounded like he was either holding something back or not wasted enough on his Auto-Tuned setup verse for T.I., shows he has some fire left-- Dedication 3 notwithstanding-- as he spits memorable line after memorable line in the opening verse here; along with the Anita Baker-sampling "Best Thing" and the passably stoned Southern-gothic Auto-crooner "Eat You Alive", it may bode better things for Wayne's upcoming Empire mixtape Da Drought Is Over, Part 6. "I need Rihanna's umbrella for this purple rain/ Earth to Wayne, call it Wayne's world," Wayne croaks.Jones, um, swaggers through an animated, solid if unexceptional verse-- he's gully, he's untouchable as if he has cooties-- ending pretty hilariously by imagining the money he'll make in Hollywood (there's something about Will Smith). Noe, a Baltimore rapper signed to Jones' Dipset offshoot Byrdgang, sounds like Jay-Z-- as is his wont-- but that's not a bad thing, and there's something refreshing about his delivery of lines about being the new kid and how he's like Frank and Sammy. Twista raps fast, as is his wont, but there's an appealing geometry in the way he varies his cadences, enunciating each word. All in all, "Jackin' Swagga From Us" is mildly less disappointing than "Swagga Like Us", but it sounds like no one's gonna jack Bun B and Rich Boy's swag. (via Nah Right)MP3:> Jim Jones [ft. Lil Wayne, Noe, and Twista]: "Jackin' Swagga From Us" (Sharebee link; get it while it lasts)[apparently from Pray for Rain; due 01/20/09 on Columbia]
