Eminem responds to criticisms over ‘gunshot’ sound effects during Firefly Festival performance

Attendees at the rapper's Bonnaroo performance earlier this month found fault with some of the noises used in his set

Eminem used his Firefly Festival headline set to respond to previous criticisms for using ‘gunshot’ sound effects.

The rapper was lambasted earlier this month (June 9) when Bonnaroo attendees likened noises in his performance to the sound of gunfire. His manager later denied this was the case, explaining it was a “pyrotechnic concussion, which creates a loud boom.”

Before Eminem appeared onstage at the Delaware festival last night (June 16), a message from him was shown on the big screens either side of the main stage.

“If you are easily frightened by loud noises or offended by explicit lyrics you shouldn’t be here,” it read, with his name underneath. USA Today reports the sound effect that caused the backlash was still present in his set.

Fans had called out the rapper following his appearance at Bonnaroo, describing the use of the sound effect as “irresponsible and distasteful” in light of the massacre at Route 91 Harvest Festival last October. At the Las Vegas event, 58 people were killed by a gunman shooting from the window of the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel.

The week before Bonnaroo, Eminem headlined Governors Ball festival in New York (June 3), where he stoked rumours he was dating Nicki Minaj and brought a host of guests on stage, including Skylar Grey, 50 Cent, and Phresher.
