Dave Grohl reveals the best band to ever open for Foo Fighters

"He’ll have the entire audience in the palm of his hand.”

Dave Grohl has revealed the best band to ever open for Foo Fighters – and it’s not who you would perhaps expect.

Despite Biffy Clyro, Wolf Alice, The Kills and Death Cab For Cutie playing second fiddle to the Foos over the years, it’s The Struts who have won Dave’s ultimate backing.

“I guess they don’t get a lot of love in England, but in America, they’re the best opening band we’ve ever had”, Grohl told Radio X.

“That kid Luke, the singer, it’s unbelievable. He’ll walk out in front of an audience in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where nobody has ever heard of them and by the end of the show he’ll have the entire audience in the palm of his hand.”

He added: I love seeing that. To see an audience turn like that is not easy.”

Grohl also explained his reasoning in choosing support bands, and how the huge platform often acts as a leg-up for emerging acts.

“One of the great things about being in the position we’re in – playing these big shows is that we get to decide who’s playing with us, and we try to expose new audiences to great new music that they maybe might not otherwise heard”, he said.

“Bands like Wolf Alice and The Cribs, they’re huge and they don’t need our help. But sometimes we’ll take out a lesser known band and have them come out on the road with us.”

Last weekend, the Foos played two epic shows at the London Stadium – hailed by NME as their greatest shows in the capital.

“As they made their debut at the former Olympic Stadium on Friday night, it seemed like the two-night residency might just prove to be the jewel in the crown of Foo Fighters’ very special relationship with the UK”, our official verdict stated.
