Dave Grohl says Foo Fighters have been approached to play the Super Bowl “multiple” times

Reports last week, however, suggested that Maroon 5 have been given the halftime show gig in 2019 by the NFL

Foo Fighters have been approached by the NFL in recent years to play the Super Bowl halftime show, according to frontman Dave Grohl.

It looks like Maroon 5 will play at next year’s NFL showpiece event, with numerous media reports all but confirming that the Adam Levine-led band have been offered the gig in 2019.

The possibility of the Foos playing at the Super Bowl one day has been discussed recently by Grohl, with the musician telling KROQ in LA that the band have been sought out “multiple” times by the organisers – but have never actually been offered the gig.

“I’ve had multiple conversations over the years with them where they say, ‘We want to have a rock and roll band. Do you think you could do it? Do you think you could do a stadium?’ I was like, ‘Yeah man, we do it all the time,'” he said.

“We’re like, ‘Oh my god, I think we’re gonna do the Super Bowl!’ And then it’ll be Madonna [who played in 2012] or Katy Perry [2015] or someone like that.”

Grohl added that he may have impeded the band’s chances of playing the show by once making a bad impression in front of an NFL executive.

“I actually got really hammered at the party in France once, and got to meet the dude that does the Super Bowl thing,” he explained. “I was like, ‘I don’t even want to do the Super Bowl! I used to want to do it. Now I don’t want to do it anymore!’”

Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins added: “Not to be negative on Maroon 5, but [the Super Bowl] always seems to be the final chapter in your career.”

Grohl did add a caveat to those remarks, however: “We’re just trying to come up with excuses why we haven’t done it.”

Earlier this month, the Foos invited a mother and daughter up on stage during their gig in Vancouver to join them for their now-customary cover of Queen‘s ‘Under Pressure’.
