The surviving members of Soundgarden have spoken about the future of the band.
Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron spoke to Rolling Stone last Sunday (October 7), their first interview together since the death of Chris Cornell last year.
In the interview, the band hinted that they may perform together in the future. Cameron said: “We’re just still taking our time and giving ourselves space to process everything…We would certainly love to try to continue to do something, figure out something to do together.”
Shepherd added: “On a personal level…we haven’t even gotten a chance to hang out, just us three, yet… We’re going through natural healing, then thinking about the natural next step.”
In a separate interview with Billboard, Thayil also discussed the possibility of the surviving members making music together again.
He said: “We often reference rock history and we’ve often commented on what other bands in similar situations have done, not as a plan or anything but just commenting on how bands have handled situations like this and what bands seem to have been graceful and dignified in how they manage their future musical endeavors and how some maybe were clumsy and callous.”
Meanwhile, a statue of Chris Cornell was unveiled in his hometown of Seattle on Sunday (October 7). The Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman died by suicide on May 18, 2017. He was 52 years old.
Speaking to the Seattle Times, Vicky Cornell, the star’s widow, said: “I wanted to celebrate and honour him, memorialise his contribution to music history and the arts, philanthropy, in his hometown where his initial impact stems from. It’s a really unique city that – it’s defined him – but also I feel like it propelled him to create this movement that would influence popular music forever.”
Last month, Cornell’s estate announced a new career-spanning box set will be released later this year. The 62-track release will feature solo work from the artist as well as tracks by Temple Of The Dog, Soundgarden, and Audioslave.
