“I promise I won’t offend anyone”: Ricky Gervais wants to host the Oscars after Kevin Hart stepped down

"I promise I won't offend anyone."

Ricky Gervais has offered to host the Oscars after Kevin Hart stepped down – and he’s even promising to not offend anyone.

He wrote on Twitter: “Dear c*nts in charge of The Oscars, let me host your show, and I promise I won’t offend anyone. Not even Mel Gibson, who you nominated last year.”

Gervais, who has previously hosted the Golden Globes, made the suggestion after Kevin Hart announced he was quitting the ceremony, amid mounting backlash over controversial tweets from 2010.

The American star was accused of using homophobic slurs after the messages were re-discovered earlier this week.

The tweets were unearthed earlier this week, and saw Hart using a series of homophobic slurs.

In one, he called out another Twitter user and referred to them as a “fat f*g.” In another, he said he would not allow his son to play with a doll’s house because “that’s gay.”

Although Hart has now offered an apology, he initially remained unrepentant – claiming “angry people love the internet.”

He also issued an Instagram video that seemingly dismissed the concerns.

“I swear man, our world is becoming beyond crazy,” he said. “I’m not going to let the craziness frustrate me or anger me, especially when I’ve worked hard to get to the mental space where I am at now.

But despite Gervais’ willingness to host the ceremony, he’s not hopeful of his choices.

“Relax. Bill Cosby has more chance than me,” he responded to one fan.

He also seemingly criticised Hart, writing “The only time I’m offended by a comedian is when they apologise.”

Gervais previously admitted his desire to host the Oscars in 2016, admitting it would be “carnage.”
