Lindsay Buckingham reveals if he would ever return to “cover band” Fleetwood Mac

"If they ask me to come back, would I?"

Lindsay Buckingham has revealed that he’d be up for returning to Fleetwood Mac, less than a year after his acrimonious departure from the iconic group.

The legendary guitarist was fired from the band in January and later said claimed that their manager Irving Azoff had told him Stevie Nicksnever wants to be on a stage with you again.

In October, Buckingham began legal proceedings against his former bandmates, claiming breach of fiduciary duty and breach of oral contract, among other complaints. Fleetwood Mac disputed the allegations made against them in the lawsuit, before the guitarist revealed last week that a settlement had been reached.

However, Buckingham now says he’d definitely be up for returning and claims that the new-look line-up – which features Crowded House’s Neil Finn and Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell – is akin to a “cover band.”

“Look, it’s Fleetwood Mac, anything’s possible. Maybe they’ll get it out of their system. If they ask me to come back, would I? Sure, because to me I think the lack of a proper farewell tour, if that’s what we’re doing, that doesn’t undercut, like I say, the legacy that we have so carefully built as the five of us, which they’re not doing right now,” Buckingham told Stereogum.

“I don’t know what they’re doing. It’s a cover band kind of deal, and Stevie may be enjoying that, and that’s fine. If she is happy doing that, there is no one outcome that I think is going to be okay. The way I look at it is it’s giving me an opportunity to do some things in a more rapid-fire way with some new people who actually care about what I’m doing and not just about getting the money from Fleetwood Mac.”

Buckingham added: “Look, I mean it does make me question who these people are, but again, to look at it compassionately, I think it’s all coming from a lack of perspective and to some degree a certain weakness on their parts. I can’t stop loving them because of that.”

As he discussed the lawsuit last week, Buckingham also insisted that he was still in touch with former bandmate Christine McVie, who told him that she “had nothing to do with any of this.”

Meanwhile, Fleetwood Mac are due to perform at London’s Wembley Stadium in June 2019, marking the new line-up’s UK debut. Remaining tickets are available to purchase here.
