Exclusive David Bowie picture disc announced for Record Store Day 2019

David Bowie‘s 1973 album ‘Pin Ups’ is being reissued as a vinyl picture disc for Record Store Day 2019, which takes place on April 13.

The album, which features Bowie covering songs by the likes of Pink Floyd, The Kinks and The Who, hit number one on pre-orders alone when it was first released 46 years ago.

Its now-iconic cover sees Bowie pictured alongside 60s supermodel Twiggy, who was also namechecked in a song on ‘Aladdin Sane’ released that same year.

PIN UPS PICTURE DISC FOR RSD 2019 – “Singing old songs he loved…” – Parlophone will be issuing David Bowie’s 1973 album of cover versions as a picture disc for Record Store Day 2019 on Saturday, 13th April. When originally released, the David Bowie/Ken Scott produced album was preceded by the only single from Pin Ups, Sorrow, which reached #3 on the UK chart. Pin Ups itself entered the UK album chart at #1 on the strength of pre-orders alone. Joining Bowie on the sleeve for Justin de Villeneuve’s extraordinary photograph with Bowie is Twiggy, name-checked earlier the same year on Aladdin Sane for Drive-In Saturday: “She’d sigh like Twig the Wonder Kid”. The photo session was shot in Paris for Vogue magazine, but at Bowie's request was used for the album instead. This same image is used for Side 1 of the picture disc. Originally, the back cover and insert featured Mick Rock photographs and Side 2 of the picture disc uses one of his artworks which utilised images from that session. The picture disc includes a reproduction of the insert, and the back cover is as the original with the following note from Bowie: + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + These songs are among my favourites from the '64–67' period of London. Side one of the picture disc features that image, taken by Justin de Villeneuve initially for Vogue magazine. Side two features a Mick Rock photograph from the same session that was used for the LP’s back cover.

Bowie’s music has become a fixture of Record Store Day. Limited edition releases of his work over the years have included picture disc singles for ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide’, ‘Changes’, ‘Drive-In Saturday’, ‘TVC 15’, ‘Life On Mars’ and ‘The Jean Genie’.

Album releases have included limited editions of his self-titled debut album, ‘Let’s Dance’, and a picture disc version of ‘The Man Who Sold The World’.

Last year, a previously unheard demo version of ‘Let’s Dance’ was released, as well as a re-pressing of a rare 1977 US promo LP featuring songs from his Low and Heroes records, and a live triple album ‘Welcome To The Blackout’.

Meanwhile, Bowie’s son Duncan Jones confirmed that he isn’t giving his seal of approval to a forthcoming biopic of the rock icon. One of Bowie’s lifelong friends has also dismissed the idea.

Last month, it was announced biopic Stardust was in the works – with Johnny Flynn set to play the late singer during his first trip to America in 1971.
