Listen to a previously unreleased Tom Petty song, ‘For Real’

It's part of a forthcoming compilation

An unreleased song by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers has dropped ahead of new two-disc career retrospective release – listen below.

‘For Real’ features on a forthcoming 38-track compilation called ‘The Best of Everything’, which will be released on March 1. The work, which celebrates the late musician, has been described in a press release as a “supplement to last year’s critically lauded, career-spanning box set ‘An American Treasure’“.

Geffen Records/UME continued: “Rather than chronological order, the special cross-label collection was sequenced as a hard-hitting playlist giving the entire catalog equal prominence.”

Included are “songs from [Petty’s] solo projects, songs with world-class musicians the Heartbreakers, as well as essentials from the reformed Mudcrutch.”

A previously unreleased alternative version of the collection’s title track, which includes an additional, never-before-heard verse, is featured in the 38-track release. ‘The Best of Everything’ originally appeared on Petty’s 1985 album ‘Southern Accents’.

Last month, Petty’s 1989 record ‘Full Moon Fever’ was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

The musician passed away in 2017 at the age of 66 from cardiac arrest.

Bob Dylan paid tribute to the late state, writing: “It’s shocking, crushing news. I thought the world of Tom. He was great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.”
