Watch Lady Gaga give impassioned speech as ‘Shallow’ wins at 2019 Oscars: ‘If you have a dream, fight for it’

Lady Gaga gave an impassioned speech as she collected the Oscar for Best Original Song for ‘Shallow’.

The pop star performed the track with her co-star Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born and co-wrote it with Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt.

“If you are at home and you’re sitting on your couch and you are watching this right now, all I have to say is that this is hard work,” she said. “I worked hard for a long time and it’s not about winning. What it’s about is not giving up.

“If you have a dream, fight for it. If there’s a discipline for passion and it’s not about how many times you get rejected or you fall down or you’re beaten up. It’s about how many times you keep on going and are brave.”

Gaga also thanked Cooper, saying: “There s not a single person on the planet who could have sang this song with me but you. Thank you for believing in us, thank you so much.”

Ronson also took the opportunity to praise the pop star, telling the Hollywood audience: “When you’re in a room with this person you don’t really have to do too much. She acts, she writes, she sings the songs. Lady Gaga, we salute you.”

Earlier in the night, Gaga and Cooper gave a performance of ‘Shallow’ that earned them a standing ovation.

You can keep up with all of the winners from the 2019 Oscars, taking place at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theater tonight (February 24), here.

Meanwhile, Gaga made a similarly spirited acceptance speech at the Grammys earlier this month (February 10) as she collected the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for ‘Shallow’. She referenced how A Star Is Born “addresses mental health issues”, saying: “A lot of artists deal with that. We gotta take care of each other. So if you so somebody that’s hurting, don’t look away. If you’re hurting, even though it might be hard, try to find that bravery to dive deep and tell somebody.”
