Fans react after Oasis, Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction and more snubbed for Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame 2024

The inductees for this year’s class were shared on a Rock Hall-themed episode of ‘American Idol’

The inductees for the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame class of 2024 have been announced, although some fans aren’t happy about those who were snubbed.

The shortlist of nominees for the Hall Of Fame was shared back in February, when 15 acts were announced as being in the running for this year’s instalment. The list included ForeignerOzzy OsbourneJane’s AddictionDave Matthews BandMary J. Blige, Eric B. & Rakim, Kool & the GangSadeMariah CareyLenny KravitzSinead O’ConnorPeter FramptonA Tribe Called Quest and Cher.

Last night (April 21), the inductees for the class of 2024 were shared on a Rock Hall-themed episode of American Idol, featuring KISSGene Simmons as a special guest.

During the episode, it was confirmed that those joining the hall this year would be Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, and A Tribe Called Quest.

It was also confirmed that Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick, and Norman Whitfield will receive the Musical Excellence Award, Alexis Korner, John Mayall, and Big Mama Thornton will be honoured with the Musical Influence Award, and Motown legend Suzanne de Passe will be this year’s Ahmet Ertegun Award winner.

While many fans took to social media to celebrate the artists being inducted for 2024, others were left frustrated after huge names in the rock world, including ‘90s alt-rock icons Jane’s Addiction and Britpop legends Oasis, fell at the final hurdle.

“I’m listening to Jane’s Addiction and Lenny Kravitz tonight. They’ve been screwed over by the RNR HOF,” wrote one user on X, who was left unhappy with the list of inductees.

“No Oasis huh? Kinda expected that,” another added. “The Americans never truly got Oasis, I doubt either Liam or Noel would’ve shown up as well, which would’ve hurt their (RnR HOF) fragile egos.”

A third showed their support for Oasis, writing: “Oasis is on another level than the RNR HOF,” while another user was left disgruntled at Mariah Carey being left off the list of inductees: “Mariah deserves it as much or more than those bands. Rock comes from blues music so pretty much anything outside of country is still rock music.”

Artists become eligible for the Rock Hall 25 years after their first release. The voting body includes over 1,000 members of the music industry, and there is also an online fan ballot, which counts as one vote.

This year, the acts had a mixed response to being put forward. Cher, for instance, said earlier this year that the Hall “can go fuck itself”, while Liam Gallagher lashed out online, writing: “fuck the Rock n Roll hall of fame, its full of BUMBACLARTS.”

The latter also told fans not to “waste your time” by voting for Oasis as “it’s all a load of bollox”, and took issue with Mariah Carey being shortlisted, adding: “As much as I love Mariah Carey… do me a favour and fuck off,” he said. “It’s like putting me in the rap hall of fame.”

Kravitz took a more relaxed approach, telling Stereogum “I’d rather get in than not,” and Jane’s Addiction simply took to social media asking fans to vote.

Foreigner had much more of a strong backing though, with Mick Jones’ stepson Mark Ronson launching a campaign after the nomination. With his push, Ronson recruited Rock Hall members Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Slash and more to encourage fans to vote for the rock veterans.

“Rock ‘n’ roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations,” said John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation of the inductees for 2024 (via AP News). “This diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.”

Four of the eight nominees – Cher, Foreigner, Frampton and Kool & the Gang – were included on the ballot for the first time. The ceremony will take place on October 19 at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse and air live on Disney+.
