Ed Sheeran is working on new music – but it won’t come out this year

"It's quite a lot being on tour and releasing records"

Ed Sheeran has said that he is working on new music but it’ll likely be a while before it’s released.

The singer-songwriter put out two albums last year, releasing the conclusion to his ‘mathematical-themed series’ ‘-‘ last May and following it up with ‘Autumn Variations’ in September.

This year, however, Sheeran has maintained his focus is on touring. He is currently in the middle of the US dates on his ‘Mathematics’ world tour, which will finish in September, and told People that while he worked on new music, it won’t see the light of day for a while.

“Nothing’s going to come out this year,” he said [via MusicNews]. “I’m enjoying being on tour. I released two records on tour last year and it’s quite a lot being on tour and releasing records. So, I’ve made the new music and I’m just going to sit on it for a bit.”

Meanwhile, he also revealed that his young daughters Lyra and Jupiter like his music but “mostly my new songs because I don’t really play my old songs in the house.”

“I feel it’d be quite weird to just put on my discography, so they mostly know the new songs that I’m working on because I play them quite a lot.”

Meanwhile, earlier this week Sheeran announced a one-off show in Brooklyn, celebrating 10 years since he shared ‘X’.

The upcoming show will be held at the historic Barclays Center in New York, where the singer, songwriter and guitarist will take to the stage on May 22 for an exclusive performance.

In other Ed Sheeran news, earlier this year the pop star sang in Punjabi for the first time during his show in Mumbai, alongside the Indian popstar Diljit Dosanjh.

The artist was playing at the Mahalaxmi Race Course in the Indian city, where he invited Dosanjh on stage with him to sing the latter’s song ‘Lover’ and delivered his lyrics in Punjabi, receiving cheers from the crowd.

Before then, it was revealed that he treated his parents and wife to a private three-hour visit to Paris’ Louvre museum, and Rick Astley performed a rendition of his track ‘Shape Of You’ during an appearance in the BBC Radio 2 Piano Room.
